Renew your UPA membership. With electonic waivers, you can do it all now and forget about last-minute scrambles come series time, plus you’re a member in time to get all the copies of USA Ultimate. Apologies to international readers who aren’t beholden to the UPA.

Get your fitness in gear. The Huddle has a nice piece by Xi Xia talking about Crossfit; longtime readers will know that I’m a huge proponent of Crossfit, and I highly recommend that you look to get into it if you want a comprhensive general physical preparedness routine for your off-season training. If you’re in season (ie college), you can definitely benefit from incorporating some strength work to your practice and other training routine. A while back I posted the routine we used at Dartmouth several years ago; it’s a solid place to start from if you’ve never lifted before, or are otherwise looking to ease into in-season training.

Play ultimate. Hopefully this is the easy one! I’ve got coaching at Vegas and dominating in Hawaii to help me get my fix this winter (and a bit of training motivation for #2). Hope you’re finding satisfying pursuits, too!

It always bears repeating that good goal-setting practices, keeping the process in mind as well as the end result, will help you achieve the ends you desire, ultimate or otherwise. Best of luck with keeping your resolutions!

Day 1
Game 1: vs. University of Northern Texas
It was pretty apparent that we’d been playing indoors for a couple months. UNT is a moderately decent team, with decent disc motion, but by and large this team won by chucking it to their big receiver(s, though only one of them did any major damage against us). I’m sure they worked it up a few times, but by and large my recollections of their scores were on hucks to matchups–not open cuts necessarily, just straight-up throwing to the tall guy. And hey, if it works well enough, can you fault them for trying?

At any rate, we had a number of errors emblematic of the indoor-outdoor transition; floaty throws that can work in ideal, still indoor conditions that outdoors are mis-placed and D’d. Several drops. This may just be me, but I felt like we were all kind of getting used to not only playing in conditions again (albeit relatively calm conditions at this point), but also to playing in cleats again. My legs spent the better part of the weekend re-adjusting to cleats, though I suspect there was more to how I felt than that.

We dropped a tight one, lost by a point according to the Vegas Score Reporter (which is woefully lacking in detailed updates, by the way). Not a particularly satisfying result, given the way we played, but we were pretty confident in our potential coming out of the game, having outplayed them in every way but just failing to get an extra break or two to get the W (granted, were we rolling the way we’re capable of, we could’ve suffered a few extra breaks against us and still won).

UPDATE: we actually lost 8-10. At any rate, it was a close game.

Game 2, vs. Whitman

Up from (t)here. We put things together a lot more successfully in this game. In contrast to UNT, which was dominated by a large cutter, Whitman’s main threat was a handler-type, which we’re much more capable of dealing with. We were in control of this game from the get-go and never really let up, winning 12-6 on the increased consistency of our play (Whitman, incidentally, would later go on to play in the Quarterfinals of the championship bracket against those silly boys from Harvard (hi, McCarthy!). Funky format, eh?).

Game 3, vs. Wesleyan

Not a ton worth recapping here, we rolled this game 13-4. Lots of fly plays by lots of fly folk, our defense was pretty suffocating here as we got several D’s short and forced several throwaways/drops as well. Props to some of our rooks for stepping up and playing well this game as we opened up the rotation. I handled a ton in this game, a trend that would continue through the weekend. I also felt REALLY good this game. I don’t know what it is–maybe playing under the lights (this game came 3 rounds after our last, started at 5 PM), as I’ve had good games at Vegas before under the lights. That Vegas sun can be draining. At any rate, I need to figure out how to get to that state consistently, because in this game sprinting pretty literally felt as easy as jogging. Probably the fastest I’ve ever felt on an ultimate field.

Interlude: Night 1

Incidentally, the first day of Vegas also happened to be the first day of my life as a 21-year-old. We hit up the strip in style to celebrate–somehow Cobbles managed to secure a stretch hummer. A “20-person” vehicle, we got by on about $5/person squeezing something like 32 people in. Oh Schmidt, Crew can stand under my umberella, Leah is crazy…lots of fun sing-alongs on the ride. We then hit up the Tropicana to check in on our alums before rolling over to the MGM to hit up the casino. All in all, not a bad way to spend one’s 21st.

Day 2

Game 4: vs. St. Olaf

The golden “O” on their jersey elicited thoughts of Oregon, but they sure didn’t play like ‘em. They had a few successes, mostly running deep against us (probably my two best bids in terms of athleticism were trying to D hucks in this game). I don’t have a ton of highlights in my mind about this game, we played hard and we won by a comfortable margin. Personally, I kept handling this game, trying to improve my positioning…in terms of energy, in contrast to the previous night, today I didn’t feel like I had that extra gear–by no means does this mean that I’m slow, but it does mean that I have to work harder. It’s a lot less taxing to handle than cut, though, so that helped balance it out.

We took this game 13-6.

Game 5: vs. Humboldt

After a bye we played Humboldt. These guys had numbers on their shorts, so you knew they thought themselves legit. And indeed we battled through the first half, more or less trading points ’til half. We had a lot of inefficiency scoring here–we were, as usual, getting the turns, but getting the disc in once we got the turn proved a frustrating task at times as we struggled all weekend to find the balance between taking our shots and playing conservative (it really should’ve tilted more towards the conservative end, given how many of our deep throws–to open cutters as they may have been–wound up poorly executed (again, a sign of our largely indoor experience these past months). We took half and went into our huddle with a sense of fulfillment. We weren’t playing up to potential.

We came out of half and slammed the door. Our O never had to take the field as we shut Humboldt out in the second half. We got our turns–short turns, long turns–and we got the disc and put it in. I think this one wound up something like 12-6 or so?

Game 6: vs UCSUV

or whatever they’re called. The guys in black. Due to a mix-up what we had previously thought was a bye had been changed into a game, so we showed up to this one late and UCSE had informed us that, sad as it may be, the rules had “required” that they assess 3 points. After a bit of bitching and a bit of intervention and apology for confusion from the TD, we started with a clean slate (though still with maybe 1/3 of our roster showing up after the game had started due to the late memo re: game start.

Undaunted by the confusion, we instead came out with a fire lit under our asses, breaking UCSDeeznuts on our first or second D point and maintaining a one or two-point lead through much of the first half. Despite their being a hack-tastic, call-happy team, we kept battling and though UCSN tied it up at points we had been consistently up on them for most of the game. In the end, we wound up losing on universe point in a hard-fought match, with our sidelines as vocal as they’ve ever been and the energy displayed on the field keying perhaps our best game of the tournament as we lost 13-14. Despite the loss we knew we had the stuff to run with this team, and even having given it our all we knew there was still more room for growth and plenty of opportunities in the game to have really taken control. Up from here.

Highlights:
-Robinho with one of the nastiest layout grabs I’ve seen from him (or anyone) for a goal early on
-Dermo with a huge layout D, following which he was taken out by a UCLV player and got a black eye (best part of which was the player attempting to call a foul on the play, after Dermott had clearly gotten the D well before any contact and if anything, the foul was on him)
-Graham being a dominator cutting, with more than one domination deep.

Lots of great signs from the team in this game, bodes well for the future of the team and of the program.

Interlude: The Dartmouth Women

They were amazing, quite simply. Thanks to the large number of byes in the format we had plenty of chances to watch them–I’m blown away. They are SO good. So many talented players, handlers, cutters, defenders, you name it. Forget how well we did and how promising our season looks–THEY are the real deal. Typically Princess doesn’t put it together ’til just before regionals, but this year they’re already gelling and they’ve still got MONTHS to fine-tune. That’s a real scary thought.

Day 3 (we all crashed hard Saturday night)

Game 7: vs. Colorado

Losing to UCSF dropped us from the championship bracket of 16 to the so-called “ninals” bracket of 8, along with a few teams whose presence outside of the championship bracket was surprising (namely, Colorado, Florida, Oregon, and to a lesser extent, Illinois and UCSD). We squared off with Mamabird to start our day. As was the theme throughout the weekend, we played decently well, getting our turns, but failed to capitalize enough to take control of the game. This was a fairly tight game throughout–I think Colorado went up on us early but we hung tough and got our breaks back. The final score of 10-13 could have easily been 11-12, as the game was capped at 12-10 and an execution error on O led to the turn and the final score. By this point in the tournament I was starting to hurt–I had re-tweaked my ankle in a collision at the end of the UCSOB game yesterday, and was playing with an ankle brace on Sunday–and in this game, I got cleated going for a sky at one point (I got skyed, or rather, out-positioned) in the knee, which had me playing with a Charlie horse for the rest of the day. Rather than talking them up or asking out, I chose to play through it all, figuring that this was as good a time as any to work on my mental toughness and to learn how to play through it, with pretty good success I’d say.

Game 8: vs. Davidson

Not sure what to say about this game. Unlike Colorado, where their success was based in part on their superior athletes (though we still got our share of turns), Davidson did not have anything too impressive or intimidating to them. This game was again hallmarked by offensive troubles, as we gave the other team far more opporunities to score than we should’ve–as a team that likes to chuck it (like many of the teams we faced), we got our chances with the disc but each time they get the disc is another 50-50 shot at a quick score, so offensive efficiency is crucial to keep them in check.

I personally had a great game–I got to cut more often in this game to good effect. Thanks to my having handled all weekend I still had a pretty good bit of gas left in the tank on Sunday despite being beat up. I finally started getting my cutting groove back on O, and defensively I feel as thought I’m making pretty good strides on containing the deep threats and really dictating with my body positioning. Somehow we still wound up losing this game, 9-13, leaving us with a sour taste in our mouth as our ninth game was a no-show.

Game 9: vs. Oregon

Apparently their ego was too bruised from prior losses to finish out the bracket, as they pulled not only out of the 15th place game with us but also out of the game before that with UBC. Unfortunate, as we were really looking forward to a ninth game to get back into a groove and finish on a strong note. Personally I was feeling amped to push myself for one more game and really get to the edge of my physical capabilities for a weekend’s worth of ultimate, but so it goes. My ankle and knee certainly didn’t mind the earlier break.

Overall, a very successful weekend for the program. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance out there, gotten a taste of what this team is REALLY capable of, and that ceiling is still a ways up there–and with that ceiling so far we STILL managed to do as well as we did. Makes a fella really excited to bust his ass over the next few months and take this program to new heights.

Haven’t done this in a while, but general thoughts on the good and the bad, personally:

Good

Defensive positioning, generally–still need to get better at pouncing after dictating my quarry to cut in, but I was very happy with my defense this weekend.

Conditioning in a general sense–stayed strong all weekend, despite getting a little banged up. Never had to ask out of a point, though I did generally play fewer points/game than in some tournaments

Health. The ankle made it ’til the end of day 2, and the knee never acted up on me (the Charlie horsed knee was the left, not my usual right nemesis)

Needs Improvement

Handler positioning/cutting/mindset. I’m getting a better sense of where I need to be, but I need to develop a stronger drive to get to that position as the disc moves–I find myself following the play too often.

Cutting sense. Particularly in points where I have to be the man cutting, I need to get a better killer instinct and take over the way I’m capable of. Additionally, a goal of mine going into the weekend (that I didn’t get to work on since I was handling) was to get a better sense of anticipation and timing for my cuts so that I’m getting open at optimal times. Still need more opportunity to do that.

How my body works. I’m not sure how or what led to me to feel as good as I did in the Wesleyan game, but I need to figure it out and apply it consistently so I can be in top form when I need it most. I can play well enough when I’m not in top form, but there’s another tier I can yet reach.

The Pain Train rolled into Vegas this weekend a collection of ultimate players, and rolled out looking less like a mishmash of players and more like a team than before (albeit with work still to be done).

We went 4-5 on the weekend, winning our last 3 games on Sunday to win the 25th place bracket. Considering that several of our losses were teams that either went on to upset top seeds or were top seeds themselves, it could be said that we played better than our record.

Short game-by-game recaps below:
Game 1: vs UChicago
We rolled fairly easily in this game. I think we won 13-7 or 8? A good way to start of the tourney, as Chicago is a pretty loose, fun team to play against and going in we felt we overmatched them enough that we didn’t have to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform to get the W.

Game 2: vs Colorado
Pretty much the opposite of the Chicago game, as we were rolled fairly easily. Colorado moved the disc very effectively, and in the words of Dan Yi, they “created space extremely well,” which they used with good effect deep and short to score. On O we were able to deal with Colorado’s defense, but our O was not clean and we gave Colorado plenty of chances to break as a result which they capitalized on. I think the final score was in the vicinity of 13-6. Of note during this game–I tweaked my left ankle yet again. Took most of the first half off, and was back in towards the end of the game with a brace for support.

Game 3: vs Texas A & M
This was a solid matchup. With two byes separating this game from our last one, we came in well-rested. We got off to a very poor start, a couple miscues and short turns allowing Texas to go up 5-1 on us, but from that point on I think it’d be fair to say we dominated the game. After getting off to a slow start personally in the first two games, I finally got my legs back under me, so to speak, and made some nice plays deep on D and O. Though we dominated the game after going down early, we didn’t dominate enough to make up for the early deficit. I think we may have lost 13-11 or 10? In any case, this ended our first day.

Game 4: vs UCLA
A good game to start off day 2, we played a close game with these guys. I think it was around this point that we really started to diagnose and make progress in our O’s struggles in terms of disc movement and setting the stack, a positive trend that would continue for the rest of the tourney. This was another fairly close loss (I never kept track of score throughout the tourney); ultimately, we played well, but unforced errors and turns kept us from capitalizing (which would become the story of the tournament).

Game 5: vs …? I can’t remember
My mind’s a blank on this one (this is what happens when I recap still tired from traveling back). We lost, but it was close? We definitely played really well in this game, we all went into the next game feeling pretty good. In any case, after this game we immediately faced…
(UPDATE: CalTech. No Boo this year to run an anti-Boo zone against, we were pretty much up to snuff but we had plenty of unforced turns. story of the tourney)

Game 6: vs CUT
…Carleton. We got hosed. This game was a bit of a step down from our last game, and I think our fatigue really started to show here as there were an inordinate number of sloppy throwaways and the like. This guy encouraged the team to “smile!” which I think definitely helped to keep the team looser and enjoy the game rather than getting all up in our own heads. Carleton was coming off of a universe-point upset loss to Las Positas (Las who? I know!), and apparently came out fired up as we scored maybe 3 points in the first half; after that, I think CUT opened up their subbing rotation to work in their younger guns and we perhaps pulled it together a bit more and scored with more regularity, but this game wasn’t close. 13-7, or 8, maybe. The loss consigned us to the 25th-place bracket on Sunday.

Game 7: vs…vs….ah, er…wow, I’m gonna need to update this post when results are posted online. (UPDATE: this game was against UC-Irvine)
We started off the third and final day with a game against a team I can’t remember the name of. I do know that this day was marked by wind, adding a significant upwind/downwind as well as crosswind factor to all of our games. The wind meant lots of turns, but by sticking to our guns on O and working the dump-swing-continue, especially upwind, our motion O carried us to a 4- or 5-point win (I think we had two or three upwind breaks on them).

Game 8: vs George Washington U
This was a really good game, a bit of back-and-forth if I remember correctly. Again, a significant upwind/downwind game. However, while GWU often resorted to the long shot (like the team we had just played) with little success, we managed to be just a bit more efficient by moving the disc and not falling prey to a huck-and-hope strategy (though we did have more than a couple punts on downwind points, and we had at least a few strong hucks that led to scores). Lots of turns, but we had fewer, and won by I think 2 upwind breaks.

Game 9: vs Western Washinton
This was it, the game for all the marbles in the 25th-place bracket. Seigs coached us against his would-be nemesis, Ben Wiggins and his WeWa Dirt. A strange game of sorts, as we wound up winning on universe point, though Dirt had a whole lot of drops/unforced turns that made our job easier. We had opened up our subbing rotation for this game–I only played maybe half a dozen points, trying (in vain) to preserve my foot, which had started to bruise on the heel from the way my brace altered my running gait.

Overall, we improved steadily throughout the weekend. I think we managed to do a good job as a team of keeping things loose and fun, never placing too much pressure on ourselves to win now and instead focusing on the bigger picture of making progress and improving as a team, and by that criterion the tournament was a success. I think we’ve discovered a lot of aspects of our game that need to be refined, from the mark to our dumps to our motion O, and we’re going to bring that home and really work to continue to improve ourselves for the spring season.

Oh, and Vegas wasn’t half bad. We had an extra day to walk the strip after the tourney ended, and my car stopped in more than a few casinos on Monday. Bellagio, Wynn, MGM Grand, among others. Good stuff. Nothing too scandalous, but a lot of walking on my aching, bruised foot, a whole lot of excess and general ridiculousness of Las Vegas, and we hit up a Chipotle for a fulfilling dinner. Flights back took forever–we rolled into the airport in Vegas at 9:00 or so for an 11:30 flight, and combine that with at 2+ hour layover in Charlotte, NC at 7 in the morning, and we were traveling for something pretty close to 12 hours. Good thing I didn’t have any homework or classes to get back to at Dartmouth upon my return!

Two days of full ultimate–4 games on Saturday and Sunday–and then 1 last game to cap it off on Monday. Boy, are my dogs tired. Dartmouth went 4-5 on the weekend, 5-5 if you count our win by default over UChicago on Monday. We were 3-1 in universe point games (4-0, if you subtract a play by this guy, more on that later), which was a good sign, though we also lost a couple games by fair margins that we really shouldn’t have to UChicago on Saturday and Tufts on Monday.

But hey, that’s how it went down. Take what’s happened for what it’s worth and build on it. For a pretty well-depleted squad of Dartmouth players that was missing over half of its studs we certainly didn’t embarass ourselves.

I’ll go through the tourney game-by-game.

Saturday:
vs Colorado- My first point in (second point of the game, D point), we forced a turn from Colorado with our zone near the zone and were primed to get the break. I made the first cut, got open against Beau [EDIT: according to Crewser, game film was checked and it was, in fact, Colorado's Beau look-alike, and not Beau himself, I got open on. Meh well, I would've gotten open either way], and was poised to make the catch in the endzone, but the throw was a little long and out of bounds. Having committed to getting the disc, I was in accelerate-to-layout mode, but couldn’t slow in time as the disc went out and wound up making a sort of half-assed fall-layout-thing, bruising the palm of my left hand (which still hurts) and tearing my red plaid skirt I was planning to make a statement with. I feel like this is a pretty good analogy for the tourney as a whole–flashes of potential, but ultimately lacking in proper execution and ending up a bit worn down. We came out fairly strong for it being our first game of our first tourney in a good while (Williams Turf Invite notwithstanding), but were still pretty flat, and Col got several breaks on us while our first opportunity to break was probably our best. 13-5 or so, Colorado.

vs. UChicago- I don’t have too much to say about this game. Saturday in general was a very flat day for the team, and for me–I don’t know if it was the heat, the sun bearing down, the lack of sleep Thursday on the flight over, the 1 1/2 of practice in the sun on Friday, or what, but probably 80% of the tourney as a whole I was playing feeling like I had no juice, no fire to kick my game up to the next level. This would be an adequate way of summing up our game against Chicago, as they went up a couple breaks and never really looked back. I think the final score was 13-9 Chicago or something like that.

vs. UMass- Just what we wanted, a regional matchup early in a tourney we flew across the country to play in. While we had a bit more fire for this game, we still didn’t have enough to get ‘er done. No idea what the final score was, but we dropped this game and dropped out of the top-tier (top 32 team) bracket.

vs. San Diego State University (I think that’s what SDSU stands for)- This game was under the lights, as the sun had already set. We played better this game. I felt pretty strong throughout the game, due in part to the bye beforehand and also due to the cooler temperature, I think. Personal highlights include a very nearly disastrous play where I spiked the disc after milking a pass into the endzone that turned out to be a pass that was contestably on the line rather than past it. Worked out all right, thanks to sideline support from Pov and good persuasion from Seigs, and one would have hoped that I’d learn my lesson from that and start checking line more carefully. Not so. Anyways, we won this game on universe point, SDSU threw zone and a couple redonkulous hammers and cross-field floaters later we’d shredded the zone and salvaged a bit of dignity on the day. 11-10 or 12-11, Dart.

As an aside–Poverty called me out on “the cockiest spike I’ve seen since Seigs” after a (admittedly pretty sweet) sky against Cal on Sunday–I just want to say that when I spike the disc, it’s always the same upside-down, over-my-right-shoulder throw. It comes pretty naturally and has become my preferred method of getting rid of the disc after the score. The magnitude of the spike is not a reflection of cockiness as much as how pumped I am after making the play. I was real stoked about pre-emptively skying two guys who were closing behind me on a deep put, ergo, the force I put into the throw for the spike sent it really high. I was really surprised when I turned around after the play to find the disc was just on its way down. When I start busting out the curtsy spike (gonna have to put the skirt to use somehow), then you can call me cocky.

Sunday:

vs. Stanford B- we showed up flat to start this game, but fortunately Stanford was ill-equipped to take advantage of it. We rattled off a couple early breaks to give ourselves a nice cushion, but then we got lazy and Stanford gave us a wake-up call with a couple breaks. In the end we rolled them pretty hard though, coming out strong in the second half. 13-7, us, I think.

vs. Cornell- this was a tight game. Both teams did well to avoid getting broken for most of the game–I think we each got one break on the other, leading to a universe D point for Dartmouth. Highlights include lots of hucks to Elliott, mostly from Seigs, with a reversal of roles at one point where Ell put it to Seigs instead. In the end, Dart got it done on defense, taking universe point in a great game. 11-10, us, I think.

vs. Cal- An interesting parallel with last year’s winter tourney where Dartmouth beat Cal (who were defending Nat’l runner-ups), making a statement about the team’s strentgh. The game actually went pretty similarly this time, too, as we were poised to take half on Cal 7-3 or 7-4 on a break, as Seigs put a short gainer to me in the endzone. But–me, being a) confused about the precise field position and ergo, the endzone position, b) always eager to generate some good flow with a quick upfield continuation, and c) not having learned my lesson to check feet, quickly spun around and fired a backhand to Sunshine, who, also influenced by a), milked the throw out of the back of the endzone instead of into it, resulting in a turn on the continuation. Cal went on to get a couple breaks on our O before we took half, and we more or less traded points leading up to universe, where Dartmouth struggled repeatedly to seal the deal in the zone, with something like 5 turns before Cal managed to pull off the break and the win. A real tough loss, especially for yours truly, though I don’t really kill myself over the play. Little point in getting myself down over something like that that was a result more of confusion and less of any particular fault in my execution or judgment (though of course, I’ll make damn sure to be more aware in the future). 11-10 or 12-11, Cal (meh…)

vs. UMass, again- tough rematch. Probably one of the last teams we wanted to play again at this point in the tourney. But we stepped it up and avenged our previous loss, with solid zone D forcing a lot of turns and the D line converting on enough to keep Dartmouth in the game. This one wound up going to universe point too, since for some reason we seem to be incapable of beating A-teams without a one-point catalyst to force our hand, and we got it done this time. 12-11, us, I think.

Monday:

vs. Tufts- Disappointing game. We showed up shortly before the game, with little time to warm up…I was playing flat, I don’t know about how the rest of the team felt, but generally everybody seemed too detached. While we didn’t play poorly, we just didn’t have any fire. Even when we had timeouts, halftime, trying to get pumped up, the motivational speeches were all pretty flatline, matter-of-fact, and I found myself trying to picture a more rage-tastic Seigs and Yi getting pissed to try and get my adrenaline flowing to little avail. Started to get some of the fire our very last point, but I couldn’t put touch on a dump pass to Socks (my second botched dump of the game, the former being an upline to Zargham that got layout D’d–should’ve looked for a better option), causing the final turn on the endline (we had too many of those on the D line that game) as Tufts took the game 12-9 or so, I think.

vs. UChicago, round II- Chicago had to catch a flight home, so we wound up winning this one by default and without a fight. Kinda a lame way to end the tourney, though we did get to watch a lot of swilly hucks with some nice highlight-reel plays to get the goals in the Fla-Carleton finals.

General notes: On a personal level, I made a few looks I was perhaps not ready to execute on properly. I had more than a few throwaways. While some of the turns were not necessarily 100% my fault–things like tiredness of the cutter going for the disc come into play–I definitely should be able to make better puts to make those discs less contestable or easier for a cutter to chase down. Certainly my forehand needs more polish at all ranges–I’ve definitely lost some of my feel for it over the winter. Backhand is pretty solid, been working on my reach and extension to get a good around/IO break with it, not that I’m often in position to have to make those sorts of breaks. As a cutter, I had a couple drops/Ds due to poor execution on cuts. Again, not all the turns were 100% my fault, but there’s still lots of room for improvement. I had more than one turn because I was adjusting a cut, either cutting off a deep cut for a gainer or an open cut to streak deep as the disc moved, only to find the one with the disc put it to me on the first cut because I was open on it. I feel like I have a pretty good sense for the temporal and spatial limits of my effectivness on cuts, but sometimes it’s more prudent to stick with the open cut I have, rather than trying to adjust and make for a more effective cut–because open is still open, period.
On that note, I have a pretty good feel for how I played this weekend. Not up to my standards in terms of success, though overall it was a great learning experience. I really was in a position to be a much bigger playmaker than I’d previously been on the A-team level, and while I didn’t exactly flourish in my efforts, I didn’t flounder either. Just another stepping stone on my way up–an assessment that I think applies to the whole team. Everybody elevated their game, and I think we all got to see where our ceilings are right now. I’m certainly not satisfied with what I’ve got right now, and I doubt the rest of the team is either. With any luck, we’ll elevate our games as the season progresses, be that much more capable and effective as a team when our usual studs come back and push us down on the depth chart, and similarly we’ll be that much better prepared to take on larger roles in years to come for the experience we had this weekend.

That’s my hope, at least. I’ve written far more than enough about this already. In terms of non-ultimate Vegas action, I slept. Lots. Watched the Olympics. Mostly slept, though…1-2 subs on D means I played close to half our points for the tourney. Lots of 50-80yrd runs…
